Pyreneism - Bookplate Henri Brulle - Works in English WELD (Charles Richard) The Pyrenees West and East. London, Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1859. In-8: XVI, 410pp. illustrated with 8 wood-engraved plates, printed on a tinted background. Chocolate percaline boards, gilt thematic iron with pick on front board and spine, cold floral decoration on boards, cold roulette on edges, gilt edges. A fine copy. Note that the woodcuts are printed on a single-pass gradient-tinted background, with solid-tinted surrounds forming the frame. The process employed, whose effect is quite attractive, probably uses oxidizable products, and on most copies a "turn" or oxidation occurs, giving a curious brown hue. On ours, this oxidation is hardly noticeable. A rare work of great interest, with around a hundred pages covering the eastern part of the region: Ariège and Pyrénées-Orientales, which was not common at the time. Numerous illustrations in the text (scattered foxing in places). Publisher's brown boards with lightened boards, gilt title on spine and first board, jaws cracked at head, rubbing. A good copy. A true mountain book with excellent illustrations. In addition to the excursions, a historical and bibliographical geological overview as well as extensive information for "Climbers". A large chapter is devoted to Andorra. Our publishers would be well advised to have it translated and published.
