Bear hunting - Lot 616
Bear hunting YORIK (J.-M. CAZAUX under the pseudonym of) Guide to Luz, Saint-Sauveur, Barèges. Tarbes, Cazaux, 1883. In-12: 176pp; 2 full-page figures in text and a large folding map in fine lithographed by LASSERRE. Bradel-style burgundy boards, gilt title and fillets on smooth spine, publisher's putty cover preserved. Uncommon. The large fold-out map was originally intended for LEQUEUTRE's guide. The last 13 pages are devoted to a bear hunt. YORIK was originally the pseudonym of Laurence STERNE, author of "Voyage Sentimental en France". A man named Gorjy published a "Nouveau voyage sentimental" under YORIK's pseudonym in 1785. Our YORIK, brother of C. CAZAUX, publisher and bookseller, is "Rédacteur du Journal de Barèges-Saint-Sauveur" as well as the newspaper's owner (reported on page 163). It is surprising to find on the 4th cover of the Cazaux bookshop catalog "Les Grandes ascensions des Pyrénées" by RUSSELL, published in 1866, and the indication "avec plusieurs cartes, un volume cartonné toile". However, the rare copies offered for sale by Cazaux with a new cover are without the maps (Labarère 1682).
