FRENCH RESTORATION SCHOOL
Waiting for the clyster - medical cartoon.
Pencil and watercolor.
26.5 x 36 cm.
1814-1824.
Original wooden mounting and frame.
A doctor, with a pinched face and a haughty air, takes the pulse of a bedridden patient whose tongue is being examined by the maid. Another maid prepares a clyster, under the mocking gaze of a fat child. A dog has got hold of one of the unfortunate man's shoes, while the other serves as a nest for mice. At the back of the bed, a bust of Louis XVIII sits between two earthenware rabbits. Is this an underlying political allusion - Louis XVIII being somewhat podagre himself? The Empire and Restoration were the first golden age of caricature, but while engravings abound, original drawings are much rarer. Ours is of fine graphic quality, and even in the form of satire, it bears witness to society.
