GENOESE SCHOOL CIRCA 1700, IN THE TASTE OF MAGNASCO - Lot 66
GENOESE SCHOOL CIRCA 1700, IN THE TASTE OF MAGNASCO People at rest in a landscape Oval canvas (lined in the early 19th century). 124 x 92 cm. (Accident in the center). In its antique frame with ribbons and laurel leaves. Son of Ancona painter Domenico Peruzzini, Francesco traveled to several Italian cities before settling in Bologna for four years, between 1682 and 1686. Here, he worked with Sebastiano Ricci. In 1703, he moved to Tuscany under the patronage of Ferdinand de' Medici, and worked with Alessandro Magnasco. In 1712, he followed Magnasco to Milan and worked with him until the 1720's. He painted the landscapes for which Magnasco posed the figures, and his fiery, almost expressionist style was perfectly in tune with the Genoese painter's extravagance. Peruzzini's world is one of exuberant nature, derived from Salvator Rosa, often rocky and wild, with small, schematically treated figures scattered across the landscape. The artist often used oval or round formats.
