Johann Peter KRAFFT (Hanau 1780 - Vienna 1856) Portrait of Franz Charles Joseph, Archduke of Austria (1802-1878) Rectangular canvas with oval view. 56 x 43.5 cm. (Old restorations). Signed and dated on the left "Krafft / 18..', inscription on the reverse of the stretcher and frame "N°141 Ritratto di S. A. I. l'Arciduc Ferdinando : Zucchi : Moderno" Johann Peter Krafft studied under Füger in Vienna. In 1801, he traveled with Hans Vert Schnorr van Carolsfeld to Paris, where he was a pupil of Jacques Louis David until 1804. He returned to Vienna in 1805/1806. He spent several months in Italy, painting numerous portraits of French generals in Rome. Back in Vienna, he painted portraits in classical, natural tones. François Charles Joseph was the third son of Emperor François I of Austria and Marie-Thérèse de Bourbon. In 1848, he renounced the throne in favor of his eldest son, Franz Joseph I. Napoleon's brother-in-law, Archduke Franz Charles married Princess Sophie, daughter of Maximilian I of Bavaria, in Vienna in 1824.
