VAUFRELAND (Henri de) viscount A Cross Country. By H.V. Sl., 1906. Large oblong in-8 (175x345mm): title and map illustrated in color, 10 handsome plates all in watercolor stencil, caption on versos of plates, foxing. ½ green percaline, boards illustrated in color, minor spotting, binding a little weak. Relations of the Match between Miss Hutton's and Frederic H. Prince's stables on the Auriac moors in April 1906, followed by a cross-country race in Biarritz between the Pau-Hunt and the Bayonne-Biarritz-Hunt. An era of regional greatness, the war of '14 decimated the ranks of the young Americans settled in the South-West, and the wealthy families left the area for good. A fine, rare album by the facetious Viscount de Vaufreland, local Baron Reille, who signs here with his initials "H.V."; the drawings are dated 1906. From this excellent illustrator we have "Croquis de Saint Cyr", - "scènes de Chasse", a series of 28 lithographs dated 1903-1904 -The Pau Hounds (à Morlaàs) will Meet.... Sl., 1905. - Pensées d'un enthousiaste (Thoughts of an Enthusiast) in 14 plates, published in 1910, the only album Thiébaud and his followers report. In 1907, he illustrated the cover of the Duke of Howth's "Leicestershire in France". In 1932-33, he contributed a 12-page article entitled "la Chasse à courre et les Courses en Béarn" to Revue de Béarn n°6. A "reduced" edition of his sumptuous handwritten notebooks was published in 1996. Vaufreland was secretary of the Pau Hunt from 1910. Provenance: Handwritten in pencil "Monsieur le marquis de Forton".
