Contemporary red morocco with green lining, signed G. BENARD, gilt title and cross on spine, gilt arms of alliances at center of boards, filleted edges, wide inner lace, green moiré endpapers, gilt edges.
François-Désiré Mathieu, French bishop, cardinal and historian. He became Archbishop of Toulouse in 1896, a position he held until 1899. He was created a curial cardinal by Pope Leo XIII as Cardinal-Priest of Sainte-Sabine during the consistory of 1899, and was called to Rome.
