Carlism CHAHO (J. Augustin) Journey to Navarre... - Lot 137 - Briscadieu
Carlism CHAHO (J. Augustin) Journey to Navarre during the Basque insurrection (1830-1835). With portraits and costumes. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1836. In-8: 2f., VIII (pref.), 456pp; frontispiece portrait of Zumala-Carreguy, 2 plates hors texte of lithographed costumes (Basquaise - Navarrais) by BAYOT (freckles in places, browned leaves). Missing 2 pages of tables. Contemporary ½ blond calf, black title-piece on spine, rubbing. First edition. The 2 costume plates are often missing. A native of Tardets, this child prodigy cultivated his taste for linguistics and philosophy with Charles Nodier. He took part in the Carlist War in 1830. Returning to France, he founded the magazine "Ariel" in Bayonne, which got him into trouble. Extremely left-wing, he took part in Bayonne politics around 1848. After the coup d'état of 1851, he had to flee to Spain, where his journal was banned. His publications are varied, full of charm and interest (Vinson 215a)(Barbe 150a).
