Louis-Lucien Bonaparte (1813-1891), Prince Bonaparte, was a deputy and then senator during the Second Empire, and a philologist specializing in the Basque language. He was fluent in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Basque. He devoted most of his time to Basque. In 1856, the Prince inaugurated a new period in Basque literature with the publication of the translation of Saint Matthew by Emmanuel Inchauspé in Souletin and by Sallaberry Ibarrola in Basque-Navarra.
