Nguzu nguzu. A pirogue bow representing a seated bust-like figure with hands clasped under the chin in an offering position. These bows were placed at the front of the pirogue, level with the waterline. They incorporated a spirit to ward off the storm demon. Blackened wood, mother-of-pearl, parinarium nut paste, eyes inlaid with obsidian fragments. Height: 14.5 cm. Base signed by Kichizô Inagaki. Solomon Islands. 19th century.
