Attributed to the late 18th-century German school in the style of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751-1829) Portrait Canvas 46.5 x 39.5 cm (Canvas faded) An aristocrat whose coat of arms appears in the upper right is seen through the oval of an oeil-de-boeuf. He is holding a book and his forearm is resting on bound books and maps. The landscape in the background features a pyramid and a circular tempietto. No doubt this portrait commemorates the Italian Grand Tour of a distinguished man of culture or "antiquarian".
