FRENCH SCHOOL CIRCA 1820 - Lot 16
FRENCH SCHOOL CIRCA 1820
Large, handsome rectangular miniature in gouache depicting an elderly man wearing a brown jacket and yellow vest, seated and holding his cane.
Size 16 x 12 cm.
(Paint missing and raised at bottom and sides).
Handwritten note on the cardboard on the back: Grandpa Lalande, born February 4, 1739, this portrait was made after him at the age of 80 in 1819 and was exhibited at the Salon du Louvre the same year.
This work can be compared with the miniatures by Jean Baptiste Jacques Augustin, a French painter and miniaturist who died in 1832, for its virtuosity of drawing, its smooth, precise style revealing the model's character. Bibl. "Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin 1759-1832: Une nouvelle excellence dans l'art du portrait en miniature" Bernd Pappe June 13, 2015.
