Eugène LE POITTEVIN (1806-1870) - Lot 57
Eugène LE POITTEVIN (1806-1870) The Pipers, 1864 Oil on mahogany panel, curved top, signed and dated 1864 lower left. 79 x 43 cm. Exhibition: Salon 1864, Paris, no. 1205 "M Le Poittevin treats genre and marine paintings with equal talent. This year he exhibited two genre paintings, Les Sonneurs and Le rêve de Cendrillon, two charming paintings. The first is very piquant in its originality. It was most likely a feast day in the village, which the church bells were supposed to announce. But, to stimulate their ardor, the ringers start by drinking so much that they get drunk, fall asleep in the bell tower and leave the bells mute." Louis Auvray, Salon de 1864, p. 60.
