MONUMENTAL VASE IN GILT BRONZE AND ROYAL RED MARBLE
of oval form, the handles adorned with two figures of loves leaning on the gadrooned rim, decorated with foliage scrolls and flowers, mascarons and lion's heads, resting on a bronze pedestal with marble counter-socle.
From a design by Claude Ballin (1615-1678).
Signature of F. Barbedienne (on the pedestal).
Second half of the 19th century, circa 1870.

This vase is a free interpretation of the vases designed by Claude Ballin in 1665 for the parterre of the Château de Versailles. Barbedienne presented this model of jardinière at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. A similar vase was sold in Bordeaux, étude Briscadieu, on May 12, 2012, lot 155, and another in Paris, étude Kâ-Mondo, on November 29, 2013, lot 186.
