According to the catalog of his work published in 2001, he was a member of the Johnston family, the illustrious Chartrons dynasty that dominated the trade in fine wines with England. Another copy is kept at the Archives de Bordeaux-Métropole.
Born in Carrara, where he was probably a pupil of Lorenzo Bartolini, Domenico Maggesi arrived in Bordeaux in 1828. A leading neoclassical sculptor, but a discreet man, he was director of the Ecole municipale de Sculpture almost until his death, and created important statues for the city - starting with those of Montaigne and Montesquieu on the Quinconces. He also sculpted in marble the portraits of a large number of Bordeaux personalities.
