1/ First edition (Sabin 3979) - 2/ This text is a documented study of the settlers on the shores of the Mississippi (climate, production, sugarcane cultivation, trade, police, mores and customs, observations on Creoles, freedmen and slaves). Berquin Duvallon, a former sugar planter, was one of the 10,000 French refugees from Saint-Domingue who fled the slave revolt in 1793 to settle in New Orleans. Several chapters are devoted to slavery.
