Architecture - Lot 213
Architecture BOSC (Ernest) Dictionnaire Raisonné d'Architecture et des Sciences et Arts qui s'y Rattachent. Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1877-1880. 4 volumes in-4; frontispiece portrait in volume 4, illustrations in text including many full-page and 36 plates out of text in chromolithographs (6/9/11/10) numbered I-CII. Contemporary ½ black chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt fillets and fleurons. A good copy. In his preface, Bosc could not overlook the similar work published by his illustrious colleague Eugène Viollet le Duc 20 years earlier. He gives the advantages of his new dictionary, pointing out that Viollet Le Duc's is not really a dictionary, that it is devoted solely to the Middle Ages and that, given the progress of time, it has become obsolete.
