Paris, Panckoucke, 1828-32. 6 volumes large in-8: 2f., XI, the text is unpaginated (each following volume has its own faux-tittre and title, the text, generally several unencumbered leaves, accompanies each plate; 359/360 plates hors texte (lacking plate 123 bis) engraved by LAMBERT, FERNER, COIGNET, CORNU, etc., (60 plates numbered 1-58 (and 2 bis) / 60 plates numbered 59-116 (and 3 bis) / 60 plates numbered 117-172 (and 4 bis) / 56 plates numbered 173-231 (and 1 bis) / 64 plates numbered 229-291 / 60 plates numbered 292-349 (and 2 bis); list of plates bis: 33, 54 / 83, 112 / 120, 123 (missing), 129, 148 / ... / 231 / 307, 333). Set conforms to Nissen (only plate 123 bis missing), plates in protective covers, occasional foxing, minor flaws outside plates. A copy given to Doctor Casenave by General Bernadotte, with an autograph letter from the General. Contemporary red calf, slightly darkened smooth spines decorated with gilt rocaille irons, gilt title and endpapers, one bit cracked over 2 cm at the foot, quintuple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt irons in the spandrels, beautiful central gilt medallion, cold geometric decoration in the frame, gilt roulette at the corners on the edges, minor wear, fine inner gilt lace, green paper endpapers with cold floral decoration, gilt edges. Superb publication intended to illustrate the "Dictionnaire des Sciences Médicales" (Nissen 349). Provenance: Copy of Dr. Cazenave, with a consignment from Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, general during the French Revolution (he was even elevated to Marshal of the Empire by Napoleon I), prestigious personality from Bearn, French soldier who became King of Sweden in 1818, under the name of Charles XIV Jean, and King of Norway under the name of Charles III Jean, after having been elected by the Swedish Parliament as heir to King Charles XIII.
