The original edition of this curious account appeared in 1632. Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a companion of Ferdinand Cortez, was governor of Santiago de Guatemala. He recounts the conquests of New Spain, the capture of Mexico City and many other cities, and asserts that his story is highly veridical, as he was present at all the battles and feats of arms.
