Atlas only. 3 large in-8 volumes: 1f. 19pp. 112 plates (human race - mammals - birds) / 1f. 22pp. 93 plates (reptiles, fish, insects) / 2f. 27pp. 83 plates (myriapods, crustaceans, arachnids, worms, mollusks, zoophytes - botany). Complete with 288 color plates grouping species of human, animal and plant orders and mounted on tabs. Light staining on a few text leaves, scattered spotting. ½ red calf, title and gilt fillets on spine. D'Orbigny, born in 1806 in Coueron, Loire, younger brother of Alcide (author of "Voyage dans l'Amérique méridionale" published from 1835 to 1849 and contributor to this dictionary), studied medicine before turning to the natural sciences in 1832. Author of numerous works on both geology and zoology, it is as coordinator of this superb dictionary that he has passed into posterity.
