2 parts bound in one volume in folio (Réflexions militaires, politiques et morales sur la vie et sur la mort du Mareschal de Matignon pp. 379 to 463) : 7f., 463pp., 16f. (tables) ; illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, a plate (tomb of the Maréchal) and a double-page family tree of the house of Matignon (plates contained in pagination). Light staining in center margin at foot, light staining at head of a few leaves. Copy with very wide margins.
Contemporary brown grained calf, spine ribbed and decorated, headbands worn, spine ends split, gilt arms on boards, corners and edges dulled, marbled edges.
First edition of the first biography of Jacques II de Goyon de Matignon, who played a significant peacemaking role during the civil wars of the 16th century as lieutenant-general of Lower Normandy, even after St. Bartholomew's Day. He succeeded his friend Michel de Montaigne as governor of Guyenne.
Provenance: A copy bearing the coat of arms of Jean du Bouchet (1599-1684), King's advisor, maître-d'hôtel ordinaire du Roi, historiographer and first constable of France. Knight of Saint-Michel. Published several genealogical works (OHR 1706).
