America - Louisiana - Lot 406
America - Louisiana CHAMPIGNY (Jean de) La Louisiane ensanglantée, avec toutes les particularités de cette horrible catastrophe, rédigées sur le serment de Témoins dignes de soi. London, Fleury Mesplet, 1773. In-8: 4f, XII, 123pp, XXXI (notes), (1), 32pp (Mémoire des habitans & négocians de la Louisiane, sur l'Évènement du 29 octobre 1768). Contemporary marbled fawn basane, ornate smooth spine, gilt roulette on edges, marbled edges. A good copy. Following its defeat by the Spanish and English in the Seven Years' War, France ceded Louisiana to Spain under the 1763 Treaty of Fontainebleau, which ratified its expulsion from North America. The French citizens of Louisiana then proclaimed a Republic, which existed from 1768 to 1769. This book is dedicated to the repression of the New Orleans Rebellion, giving an account of the trial and punishment inflicted by Spanish governor Alejandro O'Reilly on the French leaders of the Louisiana insurrection, after crushing the uprising with extreme cruelty. It covers the entire event from the cession in 1762 to 1771. The work was later published under the title "État-présent de la Louisiane, avec toutes les particularités de cette province d'Amérique". Provenance: Ex-libris printed with the arms of A4514 d'Aspit de Saint Amand.
