Bourdeaux, Millanges, 1667. In-4: 10f., 354pp. illustrated with 40/41 thematic vignettes (lacking the first engraved figure with its sizain). Text in Latin. Pages 1-2 and 81-85 are missing. The name of each emblem is added formerly in ink, light banding, small pagination errors, fringed margins on last 3 leaves. Modest modern vellum, handwritten title in black on spine. Rare but incomplete book. Inherited from the books of emblems that reached their apogee in the 17th century. The figures illustrate nature, including fauna (turtledoves, dolphin, beehives, bird of paradise, phoenix, pearl, alcyon), flora (pomegranate, cedar, pomegranate, oak, periwinkle), the stars (sun, parallels, eclipsed moon, shadowless sun, full moon, the hidden moon, the setting sun), natural phenomena (the rainbow, the waterfall, the ocean) and objects or inventions (the flapping sheep, the compass, the torch, the candle, the telescope, the scales, the ship, the rocket, the cassolette, the mirror, the hammer, the magnet, the balance, the water jet). The final motto depicts the tomb of Anne of Austria.
