2 works in one folio volume: 312pp, 27f (tables) - 1f, 55f. - 20f., 3f. (tables; incomplete with 2 endpapers); illustrated with numerous woodcut medals and full-page engraved figures, all by Pierre Eskrich. Incomplete with the large folding table showing the figure of the Roman camp. One leaf reversed by the binder. Light staining at head margin, a few leaves slightly browned. Reinforcing band binding the first 2 leaves.
Contemporary brown basane, spine ribbed and ornamented, headbands worn, jaws split, rubbing, corners bumped.
First edition of the famous Discourses by Guillaume Du Choul, humanist and archaeologist from Lyon. La Castramétation is essentially a commentary of plates on the Roman army.
Illustrated with full-page figures in the text (Traite de la castramétation) depicting Roman soldiers, military ensigns, helmets, emblems, thermal baths and toilet instruments (Traité des bains).
The first edition was published by Rouillé in 1555 (Brunet II, 858)(Adams I, 1025).
