Contemporary marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed, rubbed and sunned, red title-piece, black end-papers, tarnished head-pieces, spine ends split, double gilt fillet on edges, small leather tears on edges, corners dull, other minor defects.
First edition of this unusual work by Henri Griffet, a French Jesuit, literary scholar and historian. He replaced Father Forée in the Belles-lettres chair at the Collège Louis-le-Grand, then became confessor at the Bastille, and later obtained the title of King's preacher. After the suppression of his order in France, he retired to Brussels.
