Contemporary glazed speckled fawn calf, ornate smooth spines, red title-pieces, cold fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. A fine, fresh copy. Excellent edition (the first since the 16th century) of this famous work, given by Nicolas Lenglet-Dufresnoy, containing two prefaces (by the editor, followed by Clément Marot). In addition to the text, the following pieces are included: Vies de Jean de Meung, by André Thevet. Codicille de Jean de Meung Petit traicté d'Alchymie intitulé le sommaire philosophique de Nicolas Flamel La Fontaine des Amoureux de Science composée par Jean de la Fontaine. Balade du secret des Philosophes. The copy is complete with the supplement by Lantin de Damerey, which, although extremely rare, forms the indispensable complement to the edition; it contains a dissertation on the authors of the novel, an analysis of the work, a discourse on the usefulness of glossaries, variants restored from a manuscript by President Bouhier de Savigny, and a table of authors cited in the work (Brunet III, 1175).
