[MAILLET (Benoit de)] Telliamed ou entretiens d'un philosophe indien sur la diminution de la mer. The Hague and Paris, Duchesne, 1755. 2 volumes in-12: 2f, VII, 23pp, LXVIII, 2f, 240pp / 4f, 360pp. Contemporary marbled fawn basane, smooth spines, missing leather on spine, spotting and rubbing, other minor defects, red edges. New, partly original edition by Abbé Le Mascrier. The work is dedicated to "Cyrano de Bergerac, author of Voyages dans le soleil et dans la lune". A precursor to transformist theories. It is argued that the first animal species originally lived in the sea, and that they gave rise to today's terrestrial species through abrupt transformations. Maillet also believed in the existence of humans living in the sea!
