3 volumes in folio: 9f, 1042pp, 24f / 3f, 1194pp, 24f / 4f, 683pp, 5f. - 684-1232pp. 4f. engraved title to two volumes, over 100 engraved portraits in medallions, numerous plates of medallions in the text. Some leaves browned. Light staining on two leaves, small paper loss (restored) on the last table leaf of volume III.
Contemporary red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, inner lace, slight wear, one split bit at the foot (Volume I), gilt edges.
This history of France is considered the model of classical historiography. The author deals with economic and social conditions, then reviews the state of cities and provinces.
Provenance: Printed bookplate of Henry Labouchère, member of the British Parliament in the 1860s, reporter for The Daily News during the Siege of Paris.
