MONTAIGNE (Michel EYQUEM de) Les Essais de Michel, seigneur de Montaigne. Nouvelle édition exactement purgée des défauts des précédentes selon le vray original. Paris, Joly, 1652. In folio: 15f. (including engraved frontispiece with portrait of Montaigne), 840pp, 21f. (table, privilege). Heavy dampstaining. Small paper restorations in the margins at the head of a few leaves. Contemporary brown calf, spine decorated with later ornaments (complete restoration of the spine and spinebands by repositioning 18th-century leather extending well over the boards), red title-piece, rubbing and small tears, dull corners, one corner partly missing, red edges. Solid binding. Very good edition of essays based on the 1635 edition given by Mademoiselle de Gournay.
