PLUTARCH Les vies des Hommes Illustres Grecs et Romains, comparées l'une avec l'autre par Plutarque de Chaeronée. Traslates of Greek and French. Paris, de Vascosan, 1559 (tome I) and 1565 (tome II). 2 volumes in one in folio. The two volumes belong to different editions. Pages 398 to 409 are duplicates (they belong to both editions). Text framed. Later pastiche fawn basane, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet framing the boards, red edges. Partly first edition of Plutarch's works, with the French translation by Jacques Amyot, French humanist and prelate (this famous translation of Plutarch's Lives is his most important work). One of the masterpieces of 16th-century printing.
