Rare and sought-after - Maroquin by Chambolle-Duru RACINE (Jean) OEuvres de Racine. Paris, Barbin, 1676. 2 volumes in-12: 5f, 364pp (frontispiece and 5 plates) / 7f, 324pp, 2f. - 5f., 74pp. (frontispiece and 5 plates); illustrated with 2 false-title frontispieces, the first engraved by Sébastien Leclerc after Le Brun, and 10 plates hors texte by Chauveau. Red morocco signed CHAMBOLLE-DURU, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, minor wear, inner gilt lace, gilt edges. A fine copy. First and very rare collective edition, with the title of volume I renewed. The second volume contains the play Phèdre for the first time, unannounced in the table. This is the second state described by Tchemerzine. Includes 10 plays: La Thébaïde ou Les Frères Ennemis - Alexandre Le Grand - Andromaque - Britannicus - Les Plaideurs - Bérénice - Bajazet - Mithridate - Iphigénie - Phèdre & Hippolyte. In 1676, Racine modified the preface to Alexandre and had the 2 leaves that made it up, as well as the 2 introductory leaves of volume I, cardboard-covered, reprinted with the date 1676 in order to harmonize the edition (Tchemerzine IX, 355).
