[TABOUROT (Étienne)] - Lot 620
[TABOUROT (Étienne)] Les Bigarrures et touches du seigneur des accords, avec les apophtegmes du Sieur Gaulard, et les escraignes dijonnaises. Rouen, du Mesnil, 1648. 5 parts in an in-8 volume: 10f., 396pp. - 4f., 92pp. - 74pp., 1f. - 75pp. - 100pp. illustrated with 4 portraits and 38 in-text vignettes. Minor angular loss at foot on a few leaves. Old stiff vellum, handwritten title on spine, handwritten coat of arms at foot, red edges. Rare Rouen edition divided into five parts (Les Bigarrures - Le quatrième livre des Bigarrures - les Apophtegmes de Gaulard under the title Les contes facecieux du sieur Gaulard - Les escraignes dijonnaises - Les touches du seigneur des Accords) of this strange collection by Tabourot, the first book devoted entirely to puns. For the first time, the term contrepèterie is used to designate what was previously known as antistrophe. Les Escraignes is a first-rate testimony to popular reading and a valuable record of 16th-century Burgundian life (Tchemerzine X, 335 and 336) (Brunet Suppl. II, 718).
