REFERENCE - Lot 625
REFERENCE P. Terentii Afri Poetae Lepidissimi Comoedia omnes. Cum absolutis commentariis Aelii Donati Venetiis, Heredes Joannis Mariae Bonelli, 1570. In folio: 14f., 207f. Decorative lettering and woodcut scenes depicting the actors. Text on two columns. Light half-tone in fine. Old soft vellum, handwritten title on spine. Terence's Comédies, containing six plays, are considered the ancestors of salon comedies and modern comedies. They depict daily life and human relationships, and feature cranky fathers, rebellious sons and impertinent slaves with complex machinations and intrigues. A work of scholarship emblematic of the intellectual renewal of the Renaissance. Provenance: Printed bookplate of Mr. Yvert with the motto "In deo virescat semper".
