Hippolyte FLANDRIN (Lyon 1809-Rome 1864) Pope Alexander III and a King Black pencil on beige paper 30.1 x 19.9 cm Insolate, slight foxing, small marks, lined. Both stamped lower right (L. 933) Our two drawings are preparatory to the decor for the church of Saint Germain-des-Prés, and are set in the heart of the building, framed by decorative foliage inspired by medieval illuminations. They overlook The Ascent to Calvary and the Theological Virtues, Patience on the left and the Cardinal Virtues on the right.
