René BUTHAUD (1886-1986) - Lot 92
René BUTHAUD (1886-1986) To the glory of Bordeaux Stained-glass window for the headquarters of the Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB), 1951. Grease pencil drawing on three layers of paper mounted on canvas, signed lower left. 440 x 280 cm. (Some traces of folds and tears). Exhibition: Michel Fortin Gallery, New York, 1981, 49B Bibliography: E. Bréon et F. Cruège de Forceville et als, René Buthaud Céramiste Art déco, Ed. Norma, 2023, rep. p.157 Cards for the stained-glass windows adorning the hall of the Conseil interprofessionnel du vin de Bordeaux, cours du XXX juillet. These are full-size working drawings for the stained-glass artist. They are extremely precise, so as to leave no room for uncertainty when it comes to execution. However, there are chromatic differences between these designs, dominated by greens and yellows, and the stained glass windows, which lean towards blue and garnet red. Similarly, the all-yellow rays in the drawings alternate with whites and greens in the stained glass. Constituting the final phase of a development process, these spectacular sheets were preceded by numerous studies, most of which have now disappeared, as well as smaller-scale color models for the client's approval (the CIVB holds one of these models).
