[CLAUSADE (Gustave de) - MALBOS (Émile de) ] - Lot 87
[CLAUSADE (Gustave de) - MALBOS (Émile de) ]
Un Voyage d'Artiste, Guide dans les Pyrénées, par deux Amis, E. E. Paris, Gosselin, Renduel ; Toulouse, Dagalier, 1835.
In-8: 138pp; one folding map.
Bradel-style boards, red title page, wear rubs. Good copy.
Rare. "One of the most curious works on Pyreneanism". The artists don't give up in the face of effort and difficulty: Monné de Cauterets, Bergons, Pic du Midi and great tours such as Cauterets-Gavarnie via Lac de Gaube, Oulettes, Hourquette d'Ossoue and descent to Gavarnie. Not bad for 1835. Malbos produced a large number of lithographs of the Pyrenees, to illustrate Soutras' text (small views) or in albums (large views). In 1843, he surveyed Béarn and the Basque country with the same Clausade, with whom he published a fine album entitled "Une Visite au Bon Roi Henri suivi d'une Excursion en Guipúzcoa par Bayonne" published by Toulouse, Dupin, 1843. The B.N. catalog does not attribute this work. Marguerite Gaston names Malbos Eugène, while Soutras' "Pyrénées" notes Émile de Malbos.
