Adolphe Duponchel (+1903) was a Ponts et Chaussées engineer, director of the hydraulic department of the Hérault département. In this capacity, he carried out numerous studies on water distribution systems. He published general works on hydraulics, the use of alluvial deposits, and the fight against phylloxera by flooding vineyards. He promoted the creation of the Gignac canal from Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. In the early 1870s, he undertook a mission to Algeria, financed by the government, to study a railroad project to the south. The publication of his report on this trip in 1878 inspired several missions to the Sahara.
