An uncommon, very dense work, which conceals interesting observations on places, mores, customs, history, etc., under a cheesy title (Labarère 567). On joint : BARRAU (J.B.) : Manuel ou Vade-Mecum du Baigneur, ouvrage à la portée de tout le Monde ; contenant la manière de faire usage des Eaux Minérales en général et des Thermales Sulfureuses des Pyrénées en particulier St Gaudens, Tajan, 1836. In-8: 132pp. period brown shagreened basane, mute ornate smooth spine, black leather title-piece on upper board, wear and rubbing. For once, the age-old subject of Eaux Minérales is treated from a new perspective. An interesting chapter is devoted to Exercise "either on foot, on horseback or in a carriage" and to the "pleasures that can be indulged in the Mineral Waters", with the author insisting on Dancing! In the "Espèces de Bains" chapter, there are two categories: for the rich: "Nuptial aromatisé", "Persan" "Eau des Sultanes" or "Lait Virginal de Ninon-Lenclos". For the others: "lie de vin" "intestins" "cinabre" or for the very poor: "terre" or "air", but these last two can still be taken today at a lower cost! A curious and pleasant work. (Labarère n°567)
