Journey to Spain FISCHER (Chrétien-Auguste) Voyage en Espagne, dans les années 1797 et 1798 ; faisant suite au Voyage en Espagne de M. Bourgoing. Paris, Leriche ; Duchesne, 1801 (an IX). 2 volumes in-8: 1f., IV, 255pp. / 2f., 350pp. illustrated with 2 plates (Le Fandango - Tableau de Posada). Contemporary frosted fawn calf signed GAUDREAU (Louis Antoine, bookbinder and gilder), ornate smooth spines, black titles and endpapers, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt fillet on edges, yellow speckled edges. A fine copy. First edition. An account full of accurate and amusing details. Fischer, a German who traveled to Spain at the end of the 18th century, recounts all his observations and feelings in 45 letters, in which he describes religious festivals, bullfights, the character of Spanish women and Spanish culinary habits (Barbe 375c) (Bilbao III, 379). Louis Antoine GAUDREAU, bookbinder and gilder in Paris, probably born in 1770. Active from c. 1810 to c. 1838. He bound books for Napoleon and Cambacérès.
