Pyrenees hunting - Lot 149
Pyrenees hunting FOUQUIER (Achille) A Propos de Chasses à l'Isard, à l'Ours et au Sanglier. Paris, Vve Morel, 1872. In-8: 4f., 172pp; frontispiece portrait and 5 plates hors texte etched and aquatinted after the author. Edition of 250 copies on fine tinted Hollande with large margins. Spotting. Signed letter to Madame Frédéric Fouquier. ½ flamed basane, gilt title on smooth spine, publisher's green cover preserved. Superb copy of this very Pyrenean, well-written and extremely rare work of Pyrenean hunting carried out between 1864 and 1870 in the Aspe and Ossau Valleys, and on the Spanish side. The final chapter is devoted to wild boar hunting in Tunisia. Achille FOUQUIER was mayor of Saint-Jean-de-Luz for several years. Sensitive to fine editions, he wrote several works of souvenir or more technical research, such as these superb "Chants populaires Espagnols, quatrains et Séguidilles" published by Jouaust in 1882, illustrated by Arcos y Mégalde with notated music. All on fine paper and in small editions. Here's another very new aspect of Pyreneanism, albeit an anecdotal one: this work has something rare about it, namely the "smoked" Hollande used for printing, which is extremely fragrant, a very pleasant perfume that lingers over time, matched only by Lacaze's "Imprimeurs et Libraires en Béarn" among Pyrenean books. Provenance: Precious copy of Comte Roger de Bouillé (autograph dispatch from the author to the Comte).
