JOUDOU (Jean Baptiste Marie) - Lot 196
JOUDOU (Jean Baptiste Marie) Guide du voyageur aux bains de Bagnères, Barèges, St.-Sauveur et Cauteretz... orné de gravures. Published by J. B. J***. Paris, Lerouge, 1819. In-12; frontispiece map and 3 hors texte plates engraved in aquatint. ½ contemporary navy calf, gilt title on smooth spine decorated with rocaille irons. A fine copy. The original 1818 edition is in-8 and without illustrations. This second edition (dated) is rarer than the first. Labarère tells us: "Some very rare copies are dated 1819 on the title page. In this case, the typography of the false title and title pages is different from that of the undated edition, and the verso of the false title bears the words: de l'Imprimerie de Lefébure, rue de Bourbon, n°11". This is indeed the case with this copy. This is the first and most important work devoted to Bagnères in the Romantic period, when it was Europe's leading spa town. JOUDOU was a bookseller in Tarbes. He published this "guide" at his home. However, the 1819 edition was published in Paris by Lerouge. His next works were published by Aubanel, and JOUDOU was stationed in the Vaucluse region, where he wrote at least 3 works on Avignon and its history, the popes in Avignon, and more. Old biographies are silent on this character. JAMES (Constantin): Guide Pratique aux Eaux Minérales, aux Bains de Mer et aux Stations Hivernales augmenté d'un traité d'hydrothérapie. Paris, Bloud et Barral, sd. In-12. Contemporary blue-night chagrin, ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet on covers, double gilt fillet on edges, interior roulette, gilt edges. Provenance: Ex-libris from the library of Count Lanjuinais.
