Oloron Sainte Marie (Béarn). Etchings and drawings by Paul LAFOND. Notice by Ed. LOUIS. Paris, Rouam, 1883.
Large in folio: 24pp. (text with 10 illustrations in text) and 10 plates hors texte etched on fine Arches laid paper, printed by Lallement in Paris. Slight paper loss in margin of 2f. text.
Enclosed: - 1/ The original large-format drawing of a text illustration, signed, dated and captioned by the author, with indications for reduction (old house on rue de la cathédrale).
- 2/ A pen-and-ink watercolor of an out-of-text plate (Église Ste Croix), unsigned but by Paul LAFOND (same provenance as the drawing) and not used as a model (the perspective is slightly different).
Publisher's ½ burgundy percaline boards, printed title and Béarn coat of arms on boards, closed with laces. A fine copy, with very fresh boards.
The most beautiful work on Oloron and one of the most beautiful on the South-West. Paul LAFOND, born in Rouen, learned painting with Capdeville. He settled in Pau, where he began exhibiting in 1878. Appointed curator of the Pau Museum, he continued to practice his art, particularly engraving and etching. His albums on Pau, Oloron and Orthez, and his "Paysanneries Béarnaises", bear witness to his talent.
