POEYDAVANT, Abbé
Histoire des troubles survenus en Béarn dans le 16ème et la moitié du 17ème siècle. Pau, Tonnet, 1819-21.
3 volumes in-8: 2f. (avis), 476pp. / 1f., 490pp. / 1f., 462pp.
½ calf with period filleted corners, ornate ribbed spines, red title-pieces, black tomaisons, fillets between caissons, brittle spinebands, usual rubbing, gilt heads.
The Palois publisher took his time to publish this important work. The author, parish priest of St. Martin in Salies-de-Béarn, had almost finished his work when he was forced into exile in Spain. On his return to France, he completed his task, but death took him before he could enjoy the printed books. BATCAVE reported it to be very rare; a few copies circulated in the last decade, but are now rare again. One thing is clear: now that the great "old" bibliophiles are all dead, we can expect to see a rarity in the future of certain titles that we have seen several times in a row in recent years, until we thought they were commonplace. (Bilbao VI, 591)
BORDENAVE (Nicolas de): Histoire de Béarn et Navarre par N. de BORDENAVE (1517 à 1572). Historiographe de la Maison de Navarre, published for the first time on the original manuscript for the Société de l'Histoire de France by Paul RAYMOND. Paris, Renouard, 1873. "Société de l'Histoire de France".
In-8: 3f., 4f., XVIII, 376pp. printed on laid paper (freckles in places).
½ period fawn calf, black title-piece and iron-piece, gilt fillets on spine with false nerves. A good copy.
Interesting chronicle of a Protestant minister stationed in Nay in the second half of the 16th century. Edition prepared by archivist Paul RAYMOND. A "first-rate" document, says Dartigue-Peyrou.
