RICHARD (Jean Marie Vincent AUDIN under the pseudonym of) - Lot 318
RICHARD (Jean Marie Vincent AUDIN under the pseudonym of) Guide aux Pyrénées - Itinéraire Pédestre des Montagnes (the engraved title: "Guide du Voyageur aux Pyrénées"). Second edition. Paris, Maison, 1841. In-12: 2f., 426pp. illustrated title, 2 plates hors texte, one folding map in fine. Uncut copy. Modern burgundy boards à la Bradel (probably Doazan), title and gilt fillets on smooth spine slightly lightened, bump at foot on one cut, publisher's beige cover retained. The engraved title features a succession of small characters. This much-expanded second edition is also dated 1839 and 1840. The original is dated 1834. RICHARD's guide compiles and gives extensive excerpts from well-known authors such as Ramond, Charpentier, Azaïs, Jubinal, Lemonnier, etc., as well as from others, such as C.L., who wrote a 15-page "Ascension au Canigou" that would have remained unknown had Audin not unearthed it from the "Journal du Maine et Loire", where it appeared in March 1832. It is very difficult to know which were the first editions of each sector. An interesting and important biography of this author can be found in his "Histoire de Luther" by a well-known author: Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly (Labarère 1289). We quote a few passages from a note in this work about this little guide: "Guide fait dans le silence du cabinet, à vue de nez et à coups de ciseaux dans les rares documents que l'on pouvait avoir lu sans aucun flair de la montagne, mais avec un sens anti-montagnard prononcé. Provenance: Printed bookplate from the library of Count Frédéric de La Rochefoucauld and Christian Galau.
