ATTRIBUTED TO Georges LALLEMANT (Nancy around 1575-Paris 163 - Lot 66
ATTRIBUTED TO Georges LALLEMANT (Nancy around 1575-Paris 1636) Saint John the Evangelist and the Emperor Domitian (grisaille). Canvas. Without frame. H.: 43 cm, W.: 48.5 cm. Missing. Saint John was in Rome at the time of Domitian's persecutions, who sent for him to put him to the test. After having tested the poison on two condemned men who died of it, the high priest presents him with the cup, which he drinks without suffering any effect and resurrects the two condemned men. In the background is depicted another trial of St. John who, after being shaved, was put into a cauldron of boiling oil from which he emerged unscathed. With these two episodes, the saint reveals that the god who protects him is the true God. This work can be compared with Georges Lallemant's grisaille, "La Reine de Perse aux pieds d'Alexandre", recently acquired by the Musée de l'Oise in Beauvais. It presents the same style of composition, with empanelled figures, like here the two figures in the background in profile, wearing a beret.
