2 volumes in-8; illustrated with 2 folding frontispiece plates and a folding map of Mannicolo Island. Missing the plate "Pirogue de l'île de Mannicolo" which is almost always missing.
½ black chagrin, spine ribbed and ornamented, lack of leather at head of one volume, corners slightly dulled.
First edition of this account of the discovery of the place where La Pérouse and his companions were shipwrecked in 1788. This was near the island of Vanikoro in the Santa Cruz archipelago. Dillon's crew removed from the reefs many objects that had belonged to the Astrolabe and the Compass (bronze cannons, pulleys, anchors, etc.) and bought other items from the island's inhabitants.
