Biarritz - Lot 172
Biarritz CHAHO (J. Augustin) Biarritz between the Pyrenees and the Ocean. A picturesque itinerary. Bayonne, Andreossy, sd. (1855). 2 volumes in 12 : 4f. 316pp. 1f. - 3f., 349pp. 1f. (errata). 1/2 green chagrin of the period with gilt fillets, title, boxes and fillets on spine. A good copy. This author is known for his "Histoire Primitive des Euskariens-Basques" published in 1847 with Belzunce and his "Voyage en Navarre Pendant l'Insurrection des Basques" published in 1836-1865. Born in Tardets, this child prodigy cultivated his taste for linguistics and philosophy with Charles Nodier. He took part in the Carlist war in 1830. Back in France, he founded in Bayonne the review "Ariel" which got him into trouble. With an extreme left-wing tendency, he participated in the political life of Bayonne around 1848. After the coup d'état of 1851, he had to flee to Spain and his newspaper was banned. His publications are varied and full of charm and interest (Barbe 152)(Vinson 271).
