VIGNY (Alfred de) - Lot 400
VIGNY (Alfred de) Autograph letter signed, without place, dated September 24, 1836, in which he thanks his correspondent for the sending of a work that he will "read with a fervent attention". One ½ page in-8, with signature and dated September 24, 1836. Alfred Victor de Vigny or comte de Vigny, is a French writer, novelist, playwright and poet. An influential figure of Romanticism, he published his first poems in 1822; he also contributed to the development of the French historical novel. His work is characterized by a fundamental pessimism, and a disenchanted vision of society. His poetry is marked by a haughty stoicism announcing the poetic modernity of Baudelaire, Verlaine and Mallarmé. In 1845, he managed to be elected to the French Academy after the fifth attempt. He died of stomach cancer in 1863 after a slow agony.
