Contemporary speckled fawn calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, headbands frayed or torn, gilt roulette on edges, corners dulled, rubbed, edges speckled red.
Very rare first edition.
Louis XIV, who wished to establish commercial relations with the kingdom of Siam, sent La Loubère with the title of envoy extraordinaire. He stayed only three months, but his published account of his trip reveals a judicious and accurate observer. He provided information on the origins, customs, institutions, religion, government, industry and trade of the Siamese.
