Africa - Guyana - Louisiana LABAT (Jean-Baptiste), father Voyage du chevalier des Marchais en Guinée, isles voisines et à Cayenne, fait en 1725, 1726 et 1727. Paris, Saugrain, 1730 (volume 1); Amsterdam, dépens de la compagnie, 1731 (volumes 2 to 4). 4 volumes in-8; illustrated with 31 plates and maps, most of them folding (14/12/4/1). Small tears to some plates, scattered spotting. Contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, 3 headpieces frayed or with small lacks, gilt roulette on edges, small rubs and epidermis, red edges. Fair condition. This is Father Labat's second work devoted to the coasts of West Africa. He worked from information provided by Chevalier Des Marchais. The last two volumes deal with Cayenne and Guyane, and contain the Code Noir in force in the Islands as well as that of Louisiana; with an abridgement of the language spoken in the kingdom of Judah in Guinea.
